CURRENTLY IN THE GALLERY:

Amy McPartlin - Unleashed

From childhood I have had a natural inclination to paint, draw, sculpt, or in some other way "create". My earliest memorable painting was done in tempera paints and featured Gonzo, Miss Piggy, and Ethel Merman on the stage of The Muppet Show. I have always loved to paint.

With the economic downturn of these last few years I, like many people, experienced being laid off from my full time job. After unsuccessfully applying to dozens upon dozens of jobs - I struggled not only financially, but also mentally. Feeling purposeless in life is not comfortable. I assessed my abilities and could clearly see: although I am capable of learning many tasks and doing many jobs well... I have one Natural Talent - and this is making art. I returned to painting, tailoring my talents to the purpose of Selling My Art. I paint what people want me to paint, and I enjoy it very much. Most of my paintings are Pet Portraits. Never did I think I would be doing this. Never did I think that being laid off would lead me down this path. Life constantly surprises me with its ability to change a seemingly 'bad' circumstance into an amazing and unexpected course of events. I'm incredibly grateful.

Jane Strauss - Photography - "View from the Second Story"

In early May, I had the opportunity to travel to Chicago for a gallery opening. My son and I parked the car, and took the train and bus all over the city while there. Rafi, my son, was particularly fascinated by the Elevated Trains – I followed suit, as there are views you can only get from that height.

So, everywhere we went, one or another camera came along. The distinctive chimneys, the graffiti (which, in Minneapolis, land of conformity, would have been removed instantly), water towers, the view down to the river or the other tracks, abandoned water bottles on ledges, I documented it all.

When I got back to Minneapolis and downloaded more than 10 G of material, a concept took shape - the View from the Second Story. Grittiness remains there, as access is a bit…challenging. The contrast with countryside is stark, and I am submitting it to Paradise Center for the Arts at Debbie Small’s suggestion, and because that contrast IS intense.
