Classes for Children

Black Boot Art Club

Jan. 23, Jan. 30, Feb. 6 & Feb. 13 – 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm (4 sessions). Member $42, Non-member $54. Ages: 2nd grade and older.

Draw away the winter gray with colored pencil, colored chalk, oil pastels, markers and crayons. We will cover landscapes, animals, people/ portraits & all things interesting!

Big Boots Little Boots

Jan. 24 & 26, Jan. 31 & Feb. 2, Feb. 7 & 9 (6 sessions) Tues. & Thurs. Preschoolers & Homeschoolers.

Big Boots Little Boots is especially designed for preschoolers and homeschoolers. We will cover two-dimensional and three-dimensional visual art projects, allowing students to explore & engineer, be inspired & create, and have fun with hands-on exploring. Both groups will cover the elements of art and design in a variety of mediums. Homeschool groups may request specific projects to meet requirements or goals for academic learning.

Preschoolers (ages 3 – 5 years old, must be toilet trained) Parents or adult helpers stay and create with their child/children. Mornings 9:00 am to 10:00 am. Members $42, Non-member $54, Parents/adult helper, free.

Home Schoolers(mixed ages/grades, parents are welcome to participate) 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Member $42, Non-member $54

Beginners Watercolor Painting with Kathy Miller Class is FULL

Wednesdays: January 18, 25, February 1, 8 ,15 & 22 (6 sessions) 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Members $84.00, Non-Members $108.00, Please call or email for the supply list for this class. Come join us on a watercolor journey, a fun and exciting voyage of exploration and discovery!  This class is designed for those who want to learn the basics of watercolor painting.  During the 6-week course we will explore various techniques such as painting wet-in-wet, wet-on-dry, glazing, masking, lifting, and hard and soft edges. Emphasis will also be given to the important principles of design, composition, color theory and value.  Whether you are just beginning your journey as a watercolorist or have prior painting experience, come join us for this fun-filled class!

“All about Function”         
This workshop is all about functional pots and the beauty they bring to the table and one’s life. S.C. Rolf will discuss his life and work as a studio potter making one-of-a-kind functional pots. He will demonstrate beginning and advanced wheel-throwing techniques used in making his own work.  The workshop will also include discussion about various attributes of great pots and how one finds one’s artistic voice in their own work.  Please bring questions and issues you encounter for discussion and interactive problem solving. In addition to demonstration and discussion, a slide presentation of Rolf’s work will be included.

Tuesdays 10:30AM to 12:00PM. Member $10, Non-member $15 per session, plus clay fee. Try out our clay studio with an experienced clay instructor in attendance.

Open Batik Lab

Wednesdays starting January 11 – March 28, 10:00AM to 12:00PM. Member $10, $15 Non-member per session.

Learn to batik this winter. The textile lab will be open weekly with an experienced textile artist in attendance. You can learn to create your own original art cloth that can be used as wall pieces, home decor or wearables. Bring one yard of 100% cotton fabric that has been washed in hot water & detergent. All dyes, wax & tools are provided.

Artist Discussion Group

Artist Discussion Group meets the Third Tuesday of the month at 10:00 a.m. Artists will be meeting to discuss local art events, upcoming events, call for artists, demonstrations  and critique each others new work. Free to members of the Paradise Center for the Arts. Not a member and would like to become one call 507-332-7372.

Basics of Drawing with James Zotalis

February 9, 17 & 24 1:00 pm- 3:00pm. Member$42. & Non-Member$54.

Learn the basics of drawings from master watercolor artist James Zotalis. He will  teach  1 point perspective, 2 point perspective, explore different drawing mediums; pencil, color pencil, charcoal, pastels and take a look at the history of drawing. Perfect for beginners/intermediate students and homeschoolers.

Beginner/Intermediate Oil Painting: Winter Cardinal

Saturday February 11th (one day class)

Certified Bob Ross® painting instructor, Amy Stanek, will guide you step-by-step on how to paint a beautiful red cardinal sitting on a pine bough branch. No previous oil painting experience necessary. You will complete your painting in this one day class. Supply fee includes 16″x20″ canvas and use of brushes, paints, and easel during class. Framing with Barb Bruns

February 14, 21 & 28, 1:00PM-3:00PM. M$42 & NM$54 plus supply fee.

Learn the basics of framing with Barb Bruns of “Barb’s Custom Framing”, Barb will teach you how to frame artwork with materials you can get at hobby stores. All you need to do is bring the artwork. Two sizes will be used for this class 9X12 or 11X14 (matt opening). Barb will bring everything else that you will need. By the end of the class you will have a completed framed piece. Supply fee: 9X12 – $40.00, 11X14 – $45.

Precious Metal Clay – A New Art Medium

Saturday, April 21, 10:00AM – 4:00 PM. Age Level: Adult and Teens Students. Member$42, Non-Member$54. Supply Fee: $45 per student.

If you can work with Play-doh this is the class for you. Start with Precious Metal Clay (composed of silver particles, organic binder and water) and finish with pieces of jewelry that are 99.9% pure silver. The clay is rolled, shaped and textured to make pendants and earrings. Students will even get the opportunity to set stones into your piece. Once dried in a dehydrator the jewelry is then fired in a kiln to burn out the binder. Pieces are then polished and a patina is applied. No sawing, hammering or experience is required for the class. Just bring your creativity and a lunch. Material List: all tools and supplies are provided. Students are not required to bring anything to class. Prerequisite course and/or skills needed: none
